Don’t have your Gmail Account yet? Here it is.

Filed under: GMail around 5:26 am

I was wondering whether there are still Gmail accounts up for grabs so I did a Google and found this page giving them away. There are no ads on the site at all. All you have to do is enter in one of the ‘are you a human being?’ security codes and it takes you directly to the Gmail sign up page. Hope this helps someone.

Previously isnoop.net/gmail hosted that but Google made them take it down about 2 and half months ago. This is a good alternative.

Gmail Drive 1.0.7 released

Filed under: GMail around 5:04 am

A follow up to my earlier post on 1.0.6, GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag’n'drop files to.

The old version’s installation was contemporaneous with the disappearance of all my drive letters in Windows Explorer. Hope they fixed that ish. This technology is very interesting however, it mainly depends on your upload speed which many users have capped at numbers far below there download speeds. 384k up is not very fast to use as a second virtual hard disk. How many places are there on the net where you can get a free 2gig drive? A good way to exchange files in non realtime.

A Gmail suggestion box…courtesy of Engadget

Filed under: GMail around 9:18 pm

Some good ideas here…hopefully the good folks at Google Labs are paying attention.

I don’t really care what they do with it, as long as they continue to allow POP access with SSL security.

The people who work at google are huge nerds. Odds are at least a few of them check one of the most popular (#7 on bloglines) blogs out there. Emailing google makes people feel like they’re not being heard, but when a lot of people say it in one place, it gives their “imap please” demands more credit.

gmail already has a suggestion box but why the still need an external venue to make suggestions?

Some of the suggestions found are:

  • Contact grouping and the ability to add a filter to 1 or more groups.
  • Calendar/alarm
  • Larger size limit for attachments sent via Picasa or Hello.. or at least give them the ability to separate a shipment into multiple emails. It’s really annoying to have to select 2-3 pics at a time to send from Picasa.
  • POP3 import

Gmail-like Conversation View in Outlook 2003

Filed under: GMail around 12:52 am

Well, it’s not perfect, but it may be useful to some.

  • Create a new search folder and name it All Mail.
Don’t specify any criteria, and select the folders you want (should be only inbox and sent items folders. You may also want to uncheck the “include subfolders“ option.)
  • Go to All Mail and wait for it to finish searching (it may take a while, but it’s a one-time thing.)
  • Click the Arrange By column and select Conversation.

Gmail does this better, as conversations are grouped even when the subject changes, and it only groups a conversation from one person, whereas Outlook may include a mixture in a single group.

Outlook 2003 has a similar conversation view that can be either collapsed to a topic or expanded to show the mails in the thread (and potentially auto-preview the contents as well). As far as I can see, the primary difference between Gmail and Outlook’s conversation views is that Outlook’s is folder-specific. When viewing your Inbox in conversation view, this means that your responses don’t appear in the thread because they’re filed in the Sent-Items folder. For Outlook users who want a more accurate conversation view, a Search Folder over the Inbox and Sent-Items folders set to the conversation view should do the trick. If you find yourself using this as much as I do, then you’ll want to add the Search Folder to your list of Favorite Folders to make it easier to access.

BlinkList incorporates best of Gmail and Flickr

Here is a cool user review about a new social bookmarking site called BlinkList. I thought it was worth checking out. BlinkList also makes great use of Ajax, which is pretty nifty.

Gmail Drive 1.0.6 released

Filed under: GMail around 7:46 pm

The latest version of Gmail drive is out, which allows you to access files on a Gmail account through explorer. The latest patch remedies recent login problems.

I don’t feel comfortable giving some random website my gmail screenname and password. I think I’ll stick with Gmail Drive, as it serves my purposes. NEVER give out your passwords for ANYTHING. There is NO REASON at all that ANY website including the one you registered on would need your password. EVER.

My expierence with gmaildrive is this: I made 3 dummy accounts. Why three? Because once I logged in to the account on GMailDrive and tried to login again I could not log in. So make sure you are using a dummy account and not upload something personal.

Here is a link for a mac equivalent for os x about halfway down the page the second one.

Taken from Aimless Words GMail forum:

  • GD supports 40 character file names.
  • GD files are limited to GMail’s attachment file limits (a bit under 10mb).
  • GD does not explicitly support proxies (using a SOCKS proxy for all outgoing IP traffic would likely work).
  • GD supports one account.
  • GD uses IE under the covers so if you use IE to access your mail account and have another GDrive account you will be logging in over and over when you go to access your mail.
  • GD can be uninstalled in the standard manner - Control Panel, Add/Remove programs.
  • GD does not encrypt attachments placed in your GMail account. Act accordingly.
  • GMail does not like zip files. Rename them prior to placing them in your GDrive.

As quoted from the site:
27 July update: A change in an url redirection of the Gmail service caused problems with login. Version 1.0.6 will resolve the problem. Please uninstall (from the Windows Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs), then reboot and install the new version.

Go and get it guys!!

Gmail - Are you missing mail? Executables not allowed

Filed under: GMail around 9:21 pm

As a security measure, Gmail doesn’t allow you to send or receive executable files that could contain damaging executable code. Gmail won\t accept these types of files even if they are sent in a zipped format and is bounced back to the sender automatically. Bypass is removing the extension and having recepient re-add it.

Senang saja… heheheheee.. you can zip it up and change the extension (i.e. .z1p or .woot or .bl) and have the recipient change it back to the original extension. In otherwords, just rename it to some other extension , .tgz -> .png works, or .renametotgz which is smarter

Another way is just use WinRAR because:

  • It compresses files better
  • It will send perfectly fine you dont have to change anything

Moving to Gmail? Take your Hotmail contact list with you

Filed under: GMail around 9:14 pm

If you are moving to Gmail like thousands of other people, and would like to take your contact lists from Hotmail to Gmail, here’s how you can do it.

In other words, if you are tired of all the spam you are getting with Hotmail, if you are tired of having to sign in every 30 days, if you want to make sure your messages don’t get deleted for no reason, here is a handy way to make that switch to G-Mail.

Using Gmail for Music Sharing

Filed under: GMail around 7:46 pm

Everybody knows that gmail accounts come with over two gigabytes (and counting) of space. I know that sound awesome, but who can use all that space for just emails?

This is a very crafty way to get more out of gmail. Personally, I feel it’s just a little too late. There are so many other ways to share files with friends whether it be services like dropload.com or just over IRC or any messenger program. The one advantage this does have is its a form of ‘permanent’ online storage which is a cool way to back up music files; however, at 2GB an account…Is it even worth it? Also, how many friends would you actually feel comfortable sharing that password with… I can’t think of too many - but hey, maybe that’s just me. :)

Last I checked it was a 10 meg file limit size.. Movies can be done with a number of third party applications like Peer2mail though it will take a LOOOONG time to reattach all the parts. Well its a practical idea for music, but for video files its pretty impractical. Video files are just too large to be segmenting into tiny files and then sent and “recompiled”.

According to Google’s policies on the usage of Gmail, you are not allowed to give other people access to your “personal” gmail account. Now I’m not saying that I don’t share any gmail accounts me and my mates have, but don’t be upset if Google shuts the account down for breach of its policy on sharing, I know it’ll be pretty hard to prove you’ve shared access but it might happen (but its a long shot).

This is all well and good, until Google decides to scan the accounts looking for those with excessive numbers of files and removes those accounts for violating the TOS. Google shouldn’t be able to detect your sharing an account because the site will act as a proxy and Google will only see one IP. Of course this also slows it down quite a bit. Not saying they’ve done it yet, but I consider it just a matter of time, really.

Bear in mind that accounts that transfer a lot of data in a short period of time (lets say around a gig in 6 hours) are suspended by gmail. Although in most cases are unsuspended 24 hours later.

This is why I use the GMailFS for personal use. Works the same, but you can download from your gmail account. Get the latest GMailFS, create a filter to filter “GMailFS” to a label and archives and your in the sunshine.
