TinyApps

Filed under: Freebies around 5:36 am

TinyApps is one of my favorite freeware sites and is a collection of small (1.44 MB or less) freeware applications for various purposes. Applications with a “Green Award” tag do not need installation, do not write to the registry, and do not create or modify any files outside of their own directory, making them as “clean” as possible.

Useful Windows Software

Filed under: Freebies around 6:44 pm

Huge list of useful Windows applications. Even if you think you’ve got it all, there is going to be something here for everyone.

A great resource for just about everything under the sun. I’ve really like the XP Powertoys, the graphing calculator is great as is TweakUI. Here’s where you can further refer about SH/SC (Serious Hardware / Software Crap)

Just a note here, many of the programs listed as “Free” are actually shareware with a free trail. AKA not Free.

There are some missing like CamStudio, a very cool piece of free software (screen video recorder). It’s nearly impossible to find on Google if you don’t know its name already because the crappy commercial ones have spammed up the Google listings, which is why it needs to be on pages like this.

This site only briefly mentions (and doesn’t link to or describe) one of the application suites: Cygwin. Cygwin is a, “Cygwin is a Linux-like environment for Windows” consisting of a Linux API emulation layer and a collection of *nix tools. I find it programs essential for anyone stuck using Windows but needing to deal with *nix machines.

There’s also a lil program listed there called “NetMeter” (free and the beta version works fine) it’s almost exactly like “DU Meter” (not free). I love this little program. being able to see all my net traffic (including local network) is great.

Here’s another one of the Best list I have Seen! It is an exellent one as well.

Inbox.com Releases new features!

Filed under: Freebies, Interesting Findings around 8:57 am

Inbox.com, a free 2gig email provider, unleashes it’s new features today including Storage with no File-size limit! This does not need to be attachments, but instead, stored on your account, on their servers!

The design is a rip-off from Yahoo!’s layout, but looks better so I guess it’s excusable? The service offered is nice, but the interface is nowhere near as nice as Gmail.

What’s with the invalid certificate message I keep getting. Makes me question the security and validity of the site. Also, there’s no external (POP) access.

Gmails interface is clean, colorful and very efficient. Not only that but gmail will be offering rss feeds as well. I still keep my yahoo email for all the things you cannot get on gmail yet…I see gmail is working on it tho with the new personalized home page :P

I tried uploading a 5mb file to my test inbox.com account, and it fails with a “Error while communicating with server. Please try again later” repeatedly. Actually, I think the email storage isn’t more than 10mb, but there’s a storage option on their main site that says “coming soon”, so maybe that’s it.

When you hit upload button, it tells you all the files combined can not be more than 10 MB, which suspiciously sound like they are using the email attachment upload interface but I did not have enough time and patience today to test if it is true. If anyone tries to upload a file larger than 10Mb and becomes successful, I’d like to hear it.

Don’t start writing them down on scrap paper — get help from a password manager application. I found three open source candidates for this task: Password Gorilla, KeePass Password Safe, and Oubliette.

Test Your Connection Speed

Filed under: Freebies, Net Security around 7:44 am

A nice visual java applet that shows you your download and upload speeds. Also tells you your Quality of Service, Round Trip Time, and Max Pause.

There’s a lot of variation depending on the server being used. I got completely different results from the above test, DSL reports and pcpitstop with multiple tests on each.
