Turn your old PC into a File Server

Filed under: Interesting Findings around 8:35 pm

If you want to give that old computer new life on your home network, try using it as a file server for music or pictures or whatever so that no matter where in the house you are you can access your massive digital library from any computer. Here’s what you’ll need to do…

It’s very simple, but a lot of pictures and good explanations for those who don’t know. I would say people who are not experienced need a bit of hand holding through something like this. If they are not a member of a user group or something, this kind of article may prod them along into actually “getting their hands dirty”. Everybody has to start somewhere.

It is a very good article for what it is, though I have to agree with the rest that Linux is a much better solution for what this tutorial is trying to accomplish. On an old computer, Windows XP causes the actual data transaction rate to be slower because it’s taking most of the processing power itself! I’d recommend using something other than Windows to run on the fileserver. Windows requires more power than most old computers will run. Try some Linux distro specialized in this.

One of the problems using windows to share files is that there is a limit on how many other computers can connect to it. With XP Home I think the limit is only 5. With XP Pro and windows 2000 I think it’s 10.

There’s some other cool more advanced stuff on that site. I think the article was informative for many people who didn’t know how to do that.

Use Windows Vista from the Web

Filed under: Eye Catching around 8:35 pm

Humorous web demo of Windows Vista, check it out.

Someone has wayyyyyy too much time on his or her hands. The best part is the link in the Internet Explorer titled “Terrorists! OMG!”.

Even this parody is hard to use, keep it up Windows.

What are the things that you can’t find easily on the internet?

Filed under: Interesting Findings around 8:34 pm

Here are a list of things that you need, but can never really find it easily on the internet. Someone looking for a business idea might try to provide these answers!

Here’s one: The elevator Levitation magic trick. I know there is some sort of device involved, but cannot find it anywhere.

Yesterday I would have also added: where are my socks? but google knows that too.

In google type: where are my socks? Then hit “I’m feeling lucky”

And… they were!

But I can’t use the Internet to find my keys. Yet.

Unintentional Sexual Logo

Filed under: Eye Catching around 8:34 pm

Good for a laugh… When logo design goes bad.

I wonder who designed that. Makes you wonder how many people weren’t paying attention for that to get all the way to the window. Whoever designed that logo is a real graphic designer, they would’ve spent to long of a time with that image to have done that by accident. Unless they were dumb enough to stare at that for hours and not see a simplistic sex, then it could’ve been a mistake.

Here’s another somewhat similar, but not as bad as this logo with the same exact copy or this one… hahahahahhaa…

Funny game - Don’t get caught looking at your buddy’s sister’s boobs

I like the guy’s reaction at the end of the game, his respond at the end of the game if you win is even hilarious :-D .

This game so realistically simulates life.

WARNING: Confuse reality with fantasy!!

I’ve always had a life goal to make a profit by listing obvious information. I don’t know how much the admins get, but they have come awfully close to actualizing that dream.

Short film shot with regular Canon EOS 20D SLR camera

Filed under: Eye Catching around 8:33 pm

These guys have to much free time on their hands.. They shot a complete short film with a regular still-photo Canon EOS 20D SLR.

It’s pretty cool how more and more independent films and film school students are using this technology to make films now. It’s higher than HD res too - just not at 24fps ;) They could have at least had something - anything other than that annoying ticking in the background. Still sweet nonetheless.

For those who don’t have enough bandwidth to watch the stream, click here.

Here’s another one who used a Canon EOS 20D SLR. He took a night and 6 beers to make the FANTASY FUN TYPE LAND WITH DANGEROUS JOHNS AND ENDEVOURS*. It’s pretty brutal. And by brutal, I mean bad.
*The creator’s note, music was used WITHOUT permission.

The software behind the space shuttle

Filed under: Interesting Findings around 8:33 pm

Most of us put up with software that works most of the time. Stuff happens (on every platform) from time to time, and we reboot, relaunch, or just get over it. But with space flight, you don’t just get over it, and relaunching isn’t an option. So the software on the shuttle has to be absolutely perfect.

“For those burning the midnight oil at Microsoft putting the finishing touches on Vista, consider the following: your code sucks. So does the code in OS X, and Linux. At least, it’s pretty bad when you compare it to NASA’s.” Hehe. Big OS companys such as MS, Mac, Redhat, etc… should hire these uber coders.

The reason NASAs code is cleaner/more successful is that it does not need to be customizable. The hardware is always the same, and there are no user options to make this button blue or that button look like an ant. They also use very efficient computers that wouldn’t match up to a modern gaming machine. They don’t need all the bells and whistles.

Good thing they don’t use windows! a blue screen of death would really be death on the shuttle. :) If the shuttle was running windows:
“Go for re-entry”
“Going, Houston, we have a problem!”
“State the problem”
“We have a blue screen saying we have an Error in address 13F5238 x 1FA7237543 and an illegal operation with an ad saying do we want viagra!?”

Legal Torrents

Filed under: Torrentz around 8:33 pm

LegalTorrents is a collection of Creative Commons-licensed, legally downloadable, freely distributable creator-approved files, from electronic/indie music to movies and books, which we have made available via BitTorrent

What fun is legal torrents? You get that warm fuzzy feeling that you’re helping out the little guy. At least we dont get shot by the RIAA :P

I hate the fact that we have to make special note when a torrent is legal because torrents are too often presumed to be illegal. It should be the other way around. Bittorrent is such a great technology, it’s a shame that it’s been exploited so effectively.

Podcast now officially in the Oxford English Dictionary

Filed under: Interesting Findings around 8:33 pm

It’s official - podcast is now a recognised word. This is going to piss off Bill Gates. It’s officially unstoppable now! A modified compound of ‘iPod’ and ‘broadcast’, referring to Apple’s personal media player and the method of delivering content to it; concept reinforced by ‘pod’ rhyming with ‘broad’.

The oxford definition is wrong. There’s no mention of RSS and subscriptions, which are key details of a podcast. Otherwise, a “podcast” is just an audio file. I can’t wait until Microsoft hops on the podcast train and renames it, podcast is a horrible name….

Those people will put anything in a dictionary…u remember muggle and “badabing”?? Well, screw the dictionary if you say something and someone else knows what you mean - then it’s a word.
