Virtual Earth and Google Maps Side by Side

Filed under: Google Maps around 8:23 pm

Use Google Maps and MSN Virtual Earth at the same time.

Now, why would people want to do that?? So everyone can see with a — side-by-side comparison — how much better Google Maps is! Just made me realize how much MS maps suck. They don’t even compare to google… Cool tool. I have to agree on the comparison. Google looks more colorful and seems more up to date. It’s nice to be able to move both maps at once and see whats on Google that isn’t on MSN’s.

You ever notice how everyone has the need to copy google. Every other search engine looks like google now. Then when they come up with a really great map system, Microsoft just copies it. Next Microsoft will patent the map technology and features then claim they came up with it first. Other companies have had search engines, but now they look and act like google. Someone has a great idea and then along comes another person to copy the idea. Will mapquest come up with a new map service next?

A little-known feature of Firefox is the ability for a user to set a CSS file (Cascading Style Sheet) for a given site, replacing the one the site would otherwise use. Zmarties has created a CSS file for Google Maps and MSN Virtual Earth respectively, making some very impressive improvements to both interfaces.

How Google Maps Works

Filed under: Google Maps around 8:11 pm

It seems to be an original combination of DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, and XSLT. The built in XSLT engine transforms the XML to HTML which also explains why Google Maps only works on IE and Mozilla, it appears that this was a Microsoft technology that was later copied by Mozilla. The others such as Safari and Opera lack a built-in XSLT processor.

Is Digg really underwater?

Filed under: Google Maps around 11:40 am

Using whereis, enter digg.com, zoom all the way in, and their servers lie at the bottom of SF bay? All sysops should be SCUBA certified. But all and all, Whereis is a kickass Gmaps mashup.

Uhh… I guess its to keep it from overheating? Here’s something else cool: search for a .tk domain and youll find that it’s in Europe somewhere. Digg’s servers are locate at equanox(spelling?) and the location of the building is not published because of security. equanox basically has the majority of the nations Internet traffic routed threw one of there faculties. And if some body wanted to destroy one of these buildings, WoW would stop to work for everybody.
