Just days after the release of Firefox 1.0.5, Mozilla engineers were busy working to complete version 1.0.6 after API changes were found to have broken third-party extensions.

Why you cant use a cell phone on an airplane

Filed under: Interesting Findings around 10:03 pm

I’ve noticed that I am not allowed to use my cell phone in airplanes or in hospitals. Why are these prohibitions in place?

Because your cell phone would change cell towers to quickly and you won’t be billed for the call. LOL! Airlane phones use a different system of towers that the computers can quickly track. it’s true!

I believe another reason they do not want you to use laptops or CD Players during takeoff or landing, is so they do not become projectiles in the event of a rough takeoff/landing. It should be noted that certain companies are working toward bringing cell phone access to users onboard flights. They have already begun offering broadband services. The only way that a cell phone WILL work on an airplane, is if the plane itself has a fixed device, which are currently in testing by airliners and cellular companies.

i heard it cause ur cell phone switches towers, and if everyone would use their phones on a plane it would cause all the towers to fill up, and cause people on the ground to have more dropped calls and unable to connect to a tower. if cell phones were actually a problem, airlines would not even allowed them to be on board. Seriously, if it’s such a big deal, why aren’t flight attendants walking up and down the rows with a wand looking for phones that are on? Plus with Bluetooth phones, the thing is in your bag as your laptop surfs the internet. Wireless carriers are a powerful lobby…

At the height, mobile phones would go crazy! they be hand shaking base stations and letting go of the old base stations every 2 seconds conversations will not be as clear, the Mobile network wasn’t made for Air planes flying high at a very fast speed, faster than the Mobile station can hand over mobile phone conversations. In fact, it is impossible. If you read the linking article carefully, notice it says that interference ONLY occurs when, “the cell phone and tower handshake with each other every couple of minutes, and your phone sends a burst of data during each handshake.”

You’re actually more likely to get good coverage from a plane than from the ground. You have line of sight to many more towers and there’s basically nothing in the way, like trees and buildings and such. You are, however, also screwing up communication for most of those towers that you can reach.

The way a cellular network works is that you get assigned a specific frequency to communicate on (this is how it was in the analog days, digital is different, but similar in concept). The other towers that you’re not actually talking to have to filter you out, as interference. The more towers you reach, the more of a problem you are, basically. The system could be reworked to allow it and not cause problems on the ground area that you fly over, but the existing network really wasn’t designed with air travel in mind.

On top of that, airplanes travel in an arc-shaped path over the earth’s surface putting them within line-of sight of A LOT of towers. While the earth’s surface curvature provides a wonderful environment for triangulation on the ground using satellites (think GPS), a moving phone in the air would hypothetically end up switching towers extremely frequently.

Anyway, the only reason you can’t use a cell phone on an airplane is because OTHER people find it ANNOYING! There is no sound scientific evidence in existence to suggest that a cell phone will interfere with avionic equipment or communication gear.

Look Mom! No Parachute!

Filed under: Eye Catching around 9:48 pm

Jumping from a plane and landing safely without a parachute. This looks like the gizmo used in Tomb Raider 2: Cradle of Life.

I’ve always thought about this.. with his wings… i’ve always wondered why people cant fly down and when they get to the ground glide along the earth swoop up and land on their feet like a bird. This would have to be done low to the ground.. It’s hard to explain what I mean.. but I think it could be possible. He looks like he is doing more than just talking and theory judging from the pics, but IANASD.

Terminal velocity is the enemy, with that equipment is impossible to do it, he would need a landing train to disipate the cinematic energy of the fall, look at nature, all birds before landing counter flap to reduce their terminal velocity and I don’t think he could flap hard enough, so landing as a plane is an alternative.

Maybe he will use something like a parachute but he wont name it parachute, he would call it mini-chute. Maybe he’s planning on running really fast just as he hits the ground. :) Seriously though, I think that the suit is just the first part of it. The article makes it sound like he’s trying to figure out what other equipment minus a parachute he’ll need to land in the suit. Nonetheless, it’s still a pretty cool idea. Makes me think of the new batsuit.

From the story - “No one has ever survived a landing attempt without a parachute” - that is not really true. People have survived falls (with broken legs, hips, backs, whatever) but still alive.

I always thought of something like what the mars rover landed in. Maybe it wasn’t the rover, you know that huge round bouncing ball thing? Anyway, I think he can do it. Terminal Velocity is like 200 miles an hour for an average size person (no flaming I am not saying weight has anything to do with it, it is all about surface size i.e. fat people fall SLOWER) 200 miles per hour is very fast. Imagine getting hit with a Mac Truck going 200 miles per hour. Cut that in half a few times, things sound more reasonable. I think he will definitely be hurting when this whole thing is over. You are going to think I am crazy with this one but here goes, a cats terminal velocity is 60 miles per hour. Now, when a cat drops short distances, like off a house, they land on their feet most of the time. When they fall greater distances they fall different. They puff out their body and spread their legs. This slows them down A LOT. Cats have actually survived falls around 40 stories before. At that point the cat would have already reached terminal velocity if it wasn’t for the way it flapped out its body. Another words, that cat could have been dropped from an airplane and survived with the same results, which were a pretty bad feeling cat. The cats that feel this far broke their legs, their sternum and several ribs. Also, the reason cats can survive a long fall is due to their bone structure. I know this sounds very stupid, and I wouldn’t believe it either but it is true.

Google Maps Transparencies

Filed under: Google Maps around 9:25 pm

Click and drag anywhere, just like normal Google Maps, and see how the Map View matches the Satellite View (or vice-versa). Control the level of transparency with the slider control at bottom.

This is pretty slick… Pretty cool, though kind of pointless now, with Google Earth. Weird how Google Earth and Google maps have different satellite data. Earth has far higher resolution.

That is pretty good, same as what you can do with www.multimap.com for the UK.

Hacker Erased Spammer’s Database

Filed under: Net Security around 8:51 pm

Hacker tired of getting spam messages hacked and deleted the spammer’s database.

All I can do is smile when I read that. The good side of hackers. An example of what the hackers “should” be doing! Love to hear it! I love this person thank you on behalf of all of mankind. Two thumbs up to this guy. Anyone with the skills to do this should. It would give “hackers” more of a public defender image. Spammers deserve all the bad things in the world. About time a hacker used his/her skills to better the world :) We definitely could use a lot more of these kinds of hackers. Hackers unite take the fight right to the spammers!!!

Hacking is bad but of so good, now please hack every other spammer and rid the world of their filth. It’s hard to feel bad for the spammer, even though I think hackers are generally worse for the computing community than spammers….Ah…That’s the action of a true hacker… I would love to have seen the expression on those spammers face when they realized what happened. Greetings spammers, you have been pwned! But for real, you have no idea who you’re fucking with out there on the net.

He hacked a government server. That shouldn’t really count. If he hacked the people that keep sending me emails about Viagra then I would be happy. The Israeli National Institute of Standards being hacked doesn’t help me :) The government should pay him for doing that as a day job… Maybe they should have honored his request to be removed from the mailing list LOL

This just goes to prove that the internet is also a jungle that is ruled by the concept of “survival of the fittest.” and show you how the hackers are making internet safer for us every day!! lol

Once I nearly got $300 or so from a spam maker. I sent a email back saying “Due to limited server capacity we charge $1,000 per kilobyte of unsolicited email. Failure to comply within 30 days will lead to further action” He even gave me his phone number but I didn’t bother to call.

Let’s not bash the hackers, they’re the last line of defense when it comes to actual security issues. If we weren’t out there (white or black), there would be many more security flaws left wide open. We may be devious and a bit dark, but they are needed. Hackers are what have made the net great. I mean, without them, nobody would use Linux, and nobody would realize how much windows sucks. But seriously, I mean hacking started at MIT, come one. A real hacker is not malicious.

Hackers are the protectors of the Internet. Unfortunately idiots that let the computers turn into spam bots are the reason that you are not getting like an extra 25% of bandwidth capacity which your ISP would be able to give you if it wasn’t for the computer zombies out there. If only everyone had some computer knowledge. Hacking spammers should be 100% legal. The hacker should make all of the spammers personal details public and post his real email address to usenet. If only someone could declare it legal to hack spammers it would not only reduce the amount of spam but also the governments would not have to waste their time catching and dealing with the perpetrator. Hackers are just people with a great knowledge of computers.

Hackers = Good
Crackers = Bad
Script Kiddies = Bad
Soccer Mom/Middle American = Dumb

In this case I’d say whitehat cracking is GREAT!! :D People should do a little app that overloads the CPU and deletes data, crack all the spammers and execute the app on their servers! :D Lets hope this is the beginning of a trend next I want to see viruses that take down big spammers.

Now where can I learn to hack?

Long live anti-spammer!
.. maybe that’s why I didn’t receive them annoying emails today.
