All-In-One Sidebar for Firefox

Filed under: Browsers around 10:18 pm

All-In-One Sidebar is a highly configurable Opera-like sidebar. It puts your bookmarks, history, downloads, extensions, themes and more all in the sidebar in a standard, convient format.

Yet another extension to make firefox look/behave like Opera … why not just use Opera? While this looks good and all, I am sure many prefer a clean organized browser without too much clutter….Opera basicly had that and 86′d it because of clutter.

It’s pretty cool, but i dont think I’m going to use it that often. It takes up too much space and i don’t like to open and close it all the time…not worth it. How useful it is depends on how you use, say, your bookmarks–I hate clutter, so I don’t keep any on horizontal toolbars like some people do, and the sidebar gives easy access to bookmark/history search, and to the folder hierarchy.

You know what’s even more opera-like? Opera!

Google could become illegal in Canada

Filed under: Google around 10:01 pm

Straight from the globe and mail: “Bill C-60, which amends the Copyright Act and received its first reading in the House of Commons on June 20, suggests it could be illegal for anyone to provide copyrighted information through “information-location tools,” which includes search engines.”

I hope this doesn’t actually come into play. Would this not effect all the other search engines as well? I guess, it will effect all the other search engines if they have search results appearing that contain any form of copyrighted material.
Its not going to happen, the US makes stupid bill proposals all the time. Let’s hope this one gets thrown out like the european software patent directive.

The problem is politicians rarely have a full understanding of topics such as this. so they think they are doing the world a favor but only after the wording is interpreted by the tech community are the implications actually understood. this will never pass. or it may be reworded. How in the world would they regulate it? Make all Canadian ISP’s to block Google’s IP? Tom foolery I say. If they really want their google, they can just use a chinese proxy.

It’s crazy as it is right now, because the legislation is worded way to restrictively with virtually no respect for the consumer’s rights. All this, plus we pay a levy on EVERY piece of blank media that’s purchased. Yes, this is even collected if the blank media is being used for legitimate data backup. “It’s illegal, don’t do it… but since you are, you’ll pay for it.”

Here’s a good commentary on the legislation and here’s what you could do to help:

That said, they might block searching for torrent files or something like that on Google.ca. This Bill is mostly talking about torrent search engines like torrentspy, thepiratebay, etc. It would make it illegal to run those sites in Canada. ISP’s are also accountable (under this bill) for any illegal trade of copyrighted material on their networks.

The article’s title was intentionally sensational to get the readers’ attention. Google will not become illegal. But, it does serve to raise awareness of the scope of the Bill under consideration. Looks like this is a piece of crap article. Google is not going to be illegal in Canada EVER. Get it? Now use this as the basis for any further comments on this article.

Anybody who acts like this is a legit story is doing the media equivalent of buying stuff from e-mail spammers.

Googling for CIA Agents

Filed under: Google Maps around 10:01 pm

Yali writes “As the heat turns up on the investigation into how an undercover CIA officer’s identity was leaked to the press a technology columnist at the SF Chronicle, David Lazarus, shows how easy it is to identify individuals via the Internet. Even with little information, using widely available tools like Google and LexisNexis, it is possible to turn up startlingly relevant details.”

From the article: “I then went back to Google and got a map of Plame’s neighborhood and directions to her home. Google also allowed me to study a high-resolution satellite photo of Plame’s house. I could see that the property appears to be in a quiet residential community and looks approachable from all sides. It also offers ready access by car to major thoroughfares.”

Pamela - Skype On Steroids!

Filed under: Freebies around 7:52 pm

Pamela is a plugin for Skype with ton of great features including: 2-way call recording, create podcasts, email forwarding of voice messages, fully customisable greeting messages, time scheduling function, and more.

10 minutes recording time on the free version? This program totally f-ed up my computer after install I could no longer play any audio source. Maybe I am just an idiot, but the program seems to need more documentation.

The audio is a known Windows limitation unfortunately. Pamela does warn to check settings after install. If your Windows default audio devices are set back to your card manually, Pamela will work.

Anonymous P2P

Filed under: Freebies, Torrentz around 7:49 pm

Links to various P2P program that offer almost complete anonymity. Great for insane underground info and warez.

The main problem I have with “anonymous” p2p it’s kills speeds. You can obscure yourself but you are not anonyms. Not to mention when you obscure yourself like that you sacrifice speed and reliability.

It is possible to get anonymity on the internet. Drive up to somebodies house use their wireless connection for example. You can also basically route all traffic through god knows how many proxy servers, effectively hiding you for law enforcement, especially if you route through somewhere like Russia. Although technically some agencies could track you down it is a costly exercise.

Many wireless routers log MAC addresses for the DHCP server, also in arp cache on all the machines. a MAC is globally unique so it could be used as evidence to confirm that you’re the one who did the deed. They’d still have to catch you first, but that’s not too difficult since most warez kiddies are braggarts. If the Feds can identify the network they came from, they may be able to pull the ISP’s logs/traffic details & eventually line up a list of suspects.

Anonymity is easily possible. Proxy chaining through lists you find on the net though, not good. They just aren’t safe. All you need to do is spoof your mac address, and you’re identified as a whole other computer by the dhcp server. Better yet, spoof someone elses mac, take their ip, now that’s anonymity. Add that to being on someone else’s wifi, and proxy chaining. Hmmmm, doesn’t get more anonymous than that now does it?

I like the idea of onion routers and random servers used on Tor. These programs are nothing like the old days of Kazaa Lite, much more diffucult for the average user. Anyone still using bit torrent?

filehippo.com

Filed under: Freebies around 6:50 pm

Just came across it about 2 weeks ago or so. It provides you with the simplest method of downloading the newest (or older) versions of the best software at fast speeds.

Maybe i’m paranoid, but there’s something about third party hosting sites that makes me wary. To me its worth the extra time spent googling for the software’s homepage so that i know exactly what i’m getting.

Ok.. I AM paranoid. The MD5 for their version of Spybot matches the one from the Spybot homepage.

A Virtual View from the Top

Filed under: Eye Catching around 9:58 am

Now you can go to the top of the Eiffel Tower without ever taking a step off of your computer. This Panoramic shot of atop the Eiffel Tower lets you see out into the parisian horizon… (like anyone cares)

I actually thought this was cool considering it was virtual. Been to the top of the Eiffel Tower, nothing ‘virtual’ can ever compare to the real thing. Anyway, France passed a law regulating the height of buildings. They didnt want them to tower over their historic ones that are smaller.

Did you guys notice the older man on the lower level looking up at the girl with the skirt? What a sicko… hehe. I wish there was a virtual tour from his angle… I am not going to lie the girl to the left is pretty cute.

If there could somehow be a way to link this type of thing into Google Earth, that would be cool. Google Earth does not got to such interesting levels of detail on things like this or say, the Statue of Liberty, etc.

The site has a lot of cool panorama’s, there are more virtual views at the site.

Check out this link too, it’s full of beautiful shots from Paris.
